Fire Hydrant Flow Testing
PublicService Announcement

The Gallup Fire Department will be conducting fire hydrant flow testing, starting December 5, 2017. This program is very important to allow the fire department to identify the amount of water available for firefighting purposes.

Fire hydrant testing includes capturing pressure readings, flowing water of the fire hydrant, and documenting any inefficiency found. The maintenance program is performed by the Gallup Fire Department.

Customers who experience any discolored water problems after the hydrants aretested, are encouraged to turn on a cold-water faucet outside of the house andlet it run for 5 to 10 minutes. This will normally clear up the agitated waterfrom the service line to the home. Sediment can accumulate in the lines whichcan cause discoloration. It is recommended to check that both the hot and coldlaundry water is clear before washing. A slight decline in water quality iscommon immediately after fire hydrant testing hasoccurred. If water quality does not improve or further problems occur, contactthe City of Gallup Water Department by calling the Utility Dispatcher at 863-1200.

Testing is expected to take place Tuesday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and be completed by December 10, 2017. For more information, please contact the Gallup Fire Department at 726-5448.
