As we approach the winter season, Gallup Joint Utilities wishes to remind customers who may qualify for winter utility shutoff protection to observe the eligibility requirements.
Although the City of Gallup is not subject to the winter shutoff protection rules of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC), we do offer similar provisions for low-income customers eligible for the state’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). To qualify for utility shutoff protection during the winter heating season between November 15, 2012 and March 15, 2013, Gallup Joint Utilities customers must:
1. Submit a written request for protection to Customer Care on or before December 15, 2012. A LIHEAP eligibility letter issued by the New Mexico Human Services Department must accompany the request.
2. Pay any outstanding electric bills from the previous heating season before November 15, 2012. Your account MUST be current as of November 15 to qualify.
3. Continue to pay your other utility service charges for water, sewer and garbage in full during the winter heating season to remain eligible.
If you default on a payment plan or otherwise fail to pay your bill as agreed, your utilities may be disconnected. You will need to make suitable payment arrangements, including payment of disconnection fees, before service will be restored.
To apply for LIHEAP and obtain an eligibility letter, please contact the New Mexico Human Services Department at 3006 E. Hwy 66, Gallup, NM 87301. Phone (505) 726-7600. The office is open Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
