On Tuesday, August 18, 2015, members of the Gallup Fire Department participated in a large scale Hazardous Materials exercise with local emergency medical services, county fire departments, emergency management, and law enforcement agencies.
The Hazardous Materials (Haz Mat) exercise began at approximately 7:30 A.M. Metro Dispatch activated the Gallup Fire Department to the area of 9th Street and Coal Basin Road for a tanker truck roll-over. This dispatched information set the tone for multiple agencies to respond and join together to participate in this one day training exercise.
Large scale training exercises, provide public safety personnel from different agencies real-world scenarios to enhance their training by identifying strengths and areas for improvement. These training exercises also build camaraderie across jurisdictions to better prepare for an actual emergency. Post debriefing of the exercise attested that the training exercise was a success and that local emergency responders work well together.
