Officer Duties
Police officers must be responsible individuals with the ability to perform the following functions:
  • Accept the philosophy and comply with the principles of community-oriented policing
  • Deal effectively and tactfully with offenders, witnesses, and the general public
  • Enforce laws, reason logically, maintain an objective approach, and make sound decisions in emergencies and adverse conditions
  • Investigate crimes or offenses, including interviewing individuals, collecting and preserving evidence / property, and providing accurate testimony in court
  • Maintain acceptable knowledge of police procedures and performance of duties assigned
  • Monitor and control traffic and emergency situations and render assistance when necessary
  • Patrol the City of Gallup
  • Physically apprehend / restrain criminals and suspects
  • Protect the public, self, and other officers
  • Seek and participate in additional training
  • Serve warrants and subpoenas
  • Support and enforce the laws of the State of New Mexico and the City of Gallup
  • Uphold the Constitution of the State of New Mexico and the United States of America

Officer Applicant Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the position of police officer with the City of Gallup:
  • Proof of US Citizenship
  • Proof of the minimum age of 18
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Proof of honorable discharge if served in the military
  • High School diploma or GED certificate
  • Successful completion of a cognitive examination
  • Successful completion of a personality assessment
  • Visual acuity 20/100 or less in each eye (uncorrected), corrected to 20/20 in each eye (glasses or contact lenses)
  • Successful completion of a full medical examination once an offer of employment is received

The Gallup Police Department determines employment eligibility based on the following assessment tools:

  • Timed 1.5 mile run
  • Timed 300 meter run
  • Maximum push-ups in one minute
  • Maximum sit-ups in one minute
  • Written examination
  • Oral interview
  • Personality assessment
  • Medical examination
  • Psychological examination
  • Chief’s assessment
  • Background investigation
  • Drug screening
