Employee Benefits

The City of Gallup is proud to offer a very competitive and comprehensive benefits package to eligible positions. As a form of compensation in addition to salary, these benefits range from paid holidays to financial security after retirement, medical insurance to sick leave, and vacation leave. With few exceptions, the city either pays the cost of these benefits in their entirety or shares in the cost.

Summary of Benefits:


  • Health and Life Insurance - The city offers subsidized medical, dental, vision care, and life insurance options for employees. Employee premiums vary depending upon the options selected.
  • Retirement - The city participates in New Mexico’s Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA). City contributions vary but in most cases, the city provides a minimum contribution of 19% of employee compensation, with an employee match of 3.4%. The retirement program contributions begin upon date of hire. Employees vest in the retirement system after five years of employment. Most city employees also participate in Social Security.
  • Sick Leave - Sick leave is accrued at a rate of eight hours per month (96 hours per year). Police and Fire Department employees accrue sick leave in accordance with their respective collective bargaining agreements.
  • Vacation - Employees accrue two weeks (80 hours) of paid vacation each year of the first five years of employment. Police and Fire Department employees receive paid vacation in accordance with their collective bargaining agreements.
  • Longevity Pay - Employees become eligible for longevity pay after five years of service.
  • Holidays - Each eligible employee is paid for 11 holidays per year. Some seasonal positions do not receive holiday benefits.
  • Educational Reimbursement – The city is committed to assisting employees interested in furthering their professional development. Through this program, employees may obtain tuition and fee reimbursement for participation in an accredited and approved college degree curriculum.
  • Employee Assistance Program - The city provides an employee assistance program through a third-party provider. Each employee has access to employee assistance for various confidential counseling services.
