Applying for Lodger's Tax Funding

Applications will no longer be accepted in person at the Tourism Office, Finance, or City Managers Office, and digital submissions are not allowed.  Two copies must be provided in sealed envelopes given to the City Clerk's Office to put in the mailbox for Tourism.  

In addition, please review the checklist of required materials for the application. Applications without those materials (including budget) will not be accepted and will be mailed back to the applicant.

Under the authority of City Code 3-2C, the city has established a lodger's tax paid by persons using commercial lodging accommodations. Lodger's tax provides revenues for the purposes of advertising, marketing, and promotions of tourism related events, attractions, and facilities.

The tax is administered in compliance with the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration rules. Allowed uses are specified in New Mexico Statutes Annotated section 3-38-21 as amended in 2016. To view this click here and type in the section number.

Lodging operators are required to report lodging receipts by the twenty-fifth day of each month on city-approved forms for the preceding calendar month, and to remit payment of the amounts due. The tax rate is 5% on the gross taxable amount paid for lodging. See the Lodgers' Tax Ordinance for information on exemptions and refer to the City Ordinance for local ordinance regulations.

Lodgers' Tax in the City of Gallup offers grants for the purpose of marketing, advertising, and promotion to independent events/organizations that are creating events or other materials that generate a direct impact on tourism and city revenues.  

The final application deadline for events of FY 17 (before June 30, 2017) is April 14, 2017.  The interviews with the Lodgers' Tax committee will occur in the first week of May and will be presented to council around the same time. FY 18 applications will not be accepted for events prior to June 30, 2017.

For events in FY 18 (July 1,2017 and June 30, 2018):  Applications for consideration are due as early as possible for consideration, also with regard to the following dates:

July 14, 2017

October 13, 2017

January 12, 2018

March 16, 2018
